The Best Time to Do Something is When You Don’t Feel Like Doing it

Ever notice how the thing you feel like doing typically gets done?

I don't hear many complaining about not getting to do what they really feel like doing. While some might protest otherwise, or say "I've got copy to write but no time to do it".. that's rarely the problem. The truth is, they just don't really WANT to do it.

Heh, they'll still find time to watch the tele!

Well, that's how that goes.

So when you don't feel like doing something, what do you do? Well, you might procrastinate and make excuses. You find other things to do, things you DO want to do, and frame them as more important.

I'm very creative at finding new ways to avoid doing what I don't feel like doing.

Here's what I've found helps:

Accept that you will never feel like doing what you don't feel like doing. Start there. Yep. Accept this is just how it is. And how it always will be.

Once you make peace with that?

You will see that, as you'll never feel like doing something you don't want to do, then.. why the hell wait?

What exactly could you be waiting for?

Hell to freeze over, that's what.

So you might see that there is no way round it other than to just do it.

Fancy that.

Either that, or it'll never get done at all, which maybe that works for you. And that's an option, too.

Maybe you don't really need to do this thing? Maybe life will carry on just fine without it done.

That's up to you.

You just have to understand that your feelings are unlikely to change on the matter.

So if you want it done..

Why not do it now? Why wait? It's not going to get easier..

Which is why..

The best time to do something is when you don't feel like doing it.

And lastly?

When you're doing something you didn't feel like starting.. but which is important to you?

You WILL feel GOOD about doing it afterwards. Now.. isn't that interesting?

You'll go from not feeling like it, to feeling good about it.

And the more you do this, the stronger your "doing what I don't feel like" muscle will be.

It'll get easier.

So there you go.
