What is SEO?

SEO Stands for Search Engine Optimisation

Also known as, whatever gets eyeballs a-looking at your website.

Most people associate SEO with, “that thing you do to rank a website higher on Google.”

And, if you ask a dozen experts what SEO means, you’ll typically get answers like this:

SEO is the process of getting content to be crawled, indexed and ranked well in Google and other search engines — Barry Schwartz

But essentially, whatever helps to get your web pages higher in the rankings, can be thrown under the umbrella of “SEO.”

Yes, SEO is that broad.

Which means modern SEO includes user-experience (UX) and conversion rate optimisation (CRO) because web pages that terminate the search (satisfy the user) beat web pages that do not (all else being equal.)

SEO Is a Process

SEO is a skill you can learn. And a process you can apply.

I do SEO for my clients when they do not have the time, energy, or knowledge to do it themselves.

Increasing the Quality and Quantity of Website Traffic

Search engine optimisation is the iterative process of raising the visibility of a website or web page in a web search engine.

People enter keywords into the search engine and receive a list of results.

The more keywords your web pages rank for, the more traffic you stand to gain.

And you need to rank if you want to receive unpaid traffic from search engines like Google.

The other factor determining how much traffic you receive is the position you hold in the SERPs (search engine results pages.) The higher the position you rank, the more traffic you can expect to receive.

More keywords, in higher positions, means more quantity of traffic to your website.

The other factor worth mentioning is quality.

Quality relates to relevance.

Are the keywords you are being found for, relevant to your goals?

If you rank for keyword phrases unrelated to your products and services, then likely not.

Increasing the quality of your website traffic is achieved in a few ways.

Including…

Keyword Research

Understanding the words and phrases which are relevant to your company is the first step.

You want to be found by those looking for what you provide or help with.

I carry out keyword research for my clients and map the phrases to appropriate pages. It is essential to get this right or else your efforts will be in vain.

SEO Friendly

There are good and bad ways to carry out SEO.

My approach is good 🙂

By using safe and long-term focused SEO, there is no fear of “being found out” and losing your positions overnight. This is about risk, of course.

There are ways to improve results that carry a risk of backfiring.

I do not trouble myself with those methods.

Local SEO

Search is becoming more and more localised and personalised.

When Google detects a local intent, the results served are adjusted accordingly. If you run a local business or service, it is important you understand the different ways you can be found on Google by the people you serve.

This includes the “map pack” results.

Local SEO has its own caveats and best practices to consider.
